Smart Lights may be used to set the mood of a party or just a fancy toy to show off to your guests or simply as a fancy night lamp. My smarter friend sets alarms on his Alexa which also switches on the light along with the alarm.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Smart Bulb

  • Fitting type: B22 (bayonet) is the most common lamp holder in Indian homes, but check whether your fittings use B22 or E27 (screw) before buying.
  • Wi-Fi band: Like many smart bulbs, this one needs a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Dual-band routers usually support this, but you may need to enable the 2.4 GHz band.
  • Voice assistant: Check that the bulb works with the assistant you already use, whether Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.
  • App and updates: The bulb is controlled through the maker’s app, so a well-supported app with regular firmware updates matters for both features and security.
  • Security: Every smart bulb is a connected device on your home network. Use a strong Wi-Fi password and keep the app and firmware up to date.

Smart Lighting Beyond the Home

Smart bulbs are an easy first step into home automation, and the same ideas of remote control, scheduling and scenes scale up to commercial buildings and cities. In smart buildings, lighting is usually controlled through occupancy and daylight sensors linked to a building management system. In smart cities, connected street lighting can be dimmed or scheduled centrally to save energy.
